THE HATE: I guess, to be honest, we saw the precursors in the left's hatred of George W. Bush. You can probably find hundreds of examples documented right here on this blog, if you care to dig back a ways.
But this hatred is being carried to new levels by Tea Party adherents.
On a nationally-known blog that shall remain nameless because its originator was one of my earliest supporters (and still something of a blog friend), I made the mistake of mentioning in the comments section that I work in a public-safety job.
Public safety. Y'know, cops. Firefighters. Bailiffs. School bus drivers, of which I am one, and to whom the recent example of Charles Albert Poland Jr. serves as a daily reminder of our sacred duty. There are others, too. Snow-plow drivers and road crews, out there in their fluorescent vests at four o'clock in the morning.
Until pretty recently, we public-service workers were largely immune to hatred. After all, we do the jobs that no one else wants to do... the jobs that make a functional society functional.
But that's changed with the advent of the Tea Party. Now we are apparently leeches feeding off the poor, always-beleaguered American taxpayer. Never mind that we ourselves are taxpayers, to the same extent that everyone else who isn't filthy rich is a taxpayer; the real beef Tea Partiers seem to have with public-safety workers (and any other government worker, for that matter, except that we are particularly egregious examples) is that they have to pay us more than minimum wage to do our jobs, and must provide some semblance of benefits as well.
In the Tea Party world, they don't need us at all. With their assault weapons, they're going to be responsible for all law enforcement (never mind judges and juries, more tax dollars wasted on niceties). Oh, and they're going to pull your cat out of a burning building, like thousands of unnamed fire-department heroes do every day. And they're going to drive your kids to school on the big yellow bus, too! (Never mind that most of them can hardly drive a car, much less a 40-foot bus with sixty screaming kids on board). And they're gonna plow your streets when it snows (uh oh, there's that commercial-driver thing again). And they're going to do all this for minimum wage and no benefits, too, because they don't want to overburden the poor American taxpayer!
And y'know why?
Here's why, in the words of TP operative "swiftee":
Sounds more like you are depending on many people you hate to allow you to hang around long enough to tap them for your retirement.
You’re a hall monitor in a government school waiting for your fat PERA pension, right? No wonder you hate the Tea Party.
You identified yourself when you described your loyalty to duty as the length of time it takes you to permanently sink your teeth into the bank accounts of people you hate.
This, in response to my simple statement that I was a public-safety employee who would leave Walker's Wisconsin as soon as I could retire.
And that was just the start.
I can't wait for these anarchists to run our government. Note that they tried to take over by force last month. Please pay attention.
