QUOTE OF THE DAY: The longer this goes on, the worse it will be. And it makes no sense. The American people elected their representatives to make their lives easier, not harder. -- President Barack Obama, speaking to construction workers today about the government shutdown
The President is absolutely right. And, for the record, I blame the Tea Party for this shutdown one thousand percent. They don't have to like Obamacare, but it is the law of the land and they were sworn to uphold it. The President was comfortably reelected in good part because of his signature piece of healthcare reform, and it is downright unpatriotic for these right-wing nutcases to deny the American people something that the majority of them voted for, especially when doing so endangers our fragile economic recovery.
We know that people like the Koch brothers and their ilk want very, very bad things for this country. My question is becoming: Just what do these Tea Party "legislators" stand to gain by crushing Mr. Obama's health reforms? What do they have against millions of uninsured people suddenly getting health insurance? Don't they realize that these benefits are enjoyed by everyone else in the industrialized world? Even if we do have the best healthcare in the world, should it only be available to the rich and the fortunate?
Nobody seems to be asking these questions. Now would be a good time to start. I'd really like to know the answers.
In the meantime, for the first time in my life I'm ashamed of being an American. The rest of the world looks at us right now and sees a nation that can't govern itself. Who would want such a nation to lead the world?
