ODD OBSERVATION: Back to back on my iPod today, John Mayall's "Have You Ever Loved a Woman" (Clapton on guitar), and the Doors' "Back Door Man."*
I don't know about anybody else out there, but to me, the Doors came a whole lot closer to the spirit of the blues with their outing, Ray Manzarek's jangly Farfisa organ and all.
Moral of the story: You can't "study" the blues and ever hope to get it right. I don't think the Doors ever "studied" anything.
*Yes, blues purists, I am fully aware that "Back Door Man" was written by Willie Dixon and "Have You Ever Loved a Woman" was written by Freddie King. You're welcome.
