08/31/2011:
A NEW BEGINNING: Contrary to all appearances, it has never been my intention to let this blog die.
But a summer spent hustling for dollars under the leaden skies of Scott "Fuck 'Em" Walker's dictatorship of the ultra-rich has left me depressed, to say the least. Hurting badly enough after eight years of Jim "Governor Asshat" Doyle's incompetence, Wisconsin is now a Breughelian landscape of empty factories, shuttered businesses, foreclosed homes, decaying schools, and long-dead animals.
It's kind of what you might expect to see in rural Mississippi, except that we have winter—and fascism. (New signs at our border crossings read WISCONSIN: OPEN FOR BUSINESS! Obviously, any business owner in their right mind isn't going to relocate to a place that looks this bad, has a thoroughly and famously demoralized workforce, and one of the longest winters in these United States).
Of course, the fascist in our state house is too stupid to know that; remember, he flunked out of college.
Anyway.
I can't spend the rest of my blogging life on my feeble attempt at being a voice of resistance against the crushing weight of the Walker regime. There are other things going on in the country and in the world, and I can remember a time when I used to care about them (somebody trying to take your home away from you does tend to get your attention; thanks again, Gov. Fuck 'Em!). What I'm going to try to do here is concentrate on those things, and rebuild Schmaltz und Grieben into something resembling what it was back in its glory days (okay, quit snickering out there... ). But we did have a few bitchen conversations get started on this blog, we have a pretty good documentation of history going all the way back to early 2003, and auf course we have the most beautiful women on the planet. All in one place!
Thank you for bearing with me. I do have a glacially slow computer and I don't get to sit down at it as often as I used to, but I'll do my best to "get this sumbitch rollin'," as they say down in Texas.
