A TRUCE: I've been awfully hard on David Drucker in these pages. But it's funny... Klaus and I were talking about Drucker the other day. The longer we try to hate him, the harder he gets to hate. It's not that we come even close to agreeing with his politics [GOD forbid!], it's just that, well, he really doesn't make a very good target for our Vast Right-Wing Hatred. For one thing, he is a man of principle who puts his money where his mouth is. Here in Madison, we're surrounded by sniveling leftist asshats who spend all their time (and I mean ALL, since most of 'em don't have regular jobs) trashing America. But does it ever occur to them to LEAVE? No, because they've got it too easy here and everyone thinks they're cute. [Except us.] They're really only listening to the sound of their own voices. Drucker heard a voice too—but he acted on it. He gets props for that. The other thing? Unlike most of his ilk, Drucker is an unflappably nice guy. He's put up with a torrent of flame on his blog from myself and from much of the gang at DL, and not only has he resisted the temptation to ban right-wing posters, he will actually engage us in dialogue (so much so that he was offered the opportunity to do a guest-author post on DL, an opportunity I still hope he'll take advantage of).Yes, I strongly disagree with his politics, and yes, I very much believe that he's got his head in the sand and doesn't realize that the fun days of our youths are pretty much over. But I'm declaring a truce. It's not open season on David Drucker around these parts anymore. There are people much, much more deserving of our abject hatred and loathing. If you're going to be right, a good place to start is to admit when you're wrong.Posted by Alois on
Has it ever occurred to you that maybe the people who complain about the things wrong with American stay here because they love their country and just want to see it be better?
No, probably not... that would require the ability to see more than black and white.

Here's what occurs to me, Steve:
The people I'm referring to above continually refer to the US as a "fascist dictatorship"--which isn't true on its face, since if it was these people would already be incarcerated.
They use the "fascist dictatorship" meme as an excuse not to vote (because that would mean that they're participating in the "war machine," dontcha know).
And these people are showing love for their country exactly how?

Well in that case you may have a point. There's never a legitimate excuse for not voting. It's a fundamental right of democracy and it's appalling how many people can't be bothered to participate.

Yup. You don't create a "fascist dictatorship" just because you took your ball and went home.
BTW, Drucker (the subject of this post) and I actually managed to become friends.
So if Drucker and I can become friends, I certainly think that your participation on this blog would be welcomed.
