HAPPY OCTOBER. Wisconsin is, to paraphrase local writer Debra Munro, a "wild, cold state." Already frost on the ground this morning; wearing a parka and gloves whilst walking the canids. There is something bracing about it... just that it gets a little old when you're still wearing that same parka and gloves at the end of May. Summer seems very, very short here--and it is.

Blogging will be light or nonexistent over the next few days while I'm in Milwaukee on business. You never know, though, I may still manage to squeeze in a shout or two.

In the meantime, if you haven't checked in lately, I posted quite a bit of stuff (and some great pictures) toward the end of September. See link below.

Kuwait foils smuggling of chemicals, bio warheads from Iraq

Associated Press, Kuwait City, October 2

Kuwaiti security authorities have foiled an attempt to smuggle $60 million worth of chemical weapons and biological warheads from Iraq to an unnamed European country, a Kuwaiti newspaper said on Wednesday.

The pro-Government Al-Siyassah, quoting an unnamed security source, said the suspects had been watched by security since they arrived in Kuwait and were arrested "in due time." It did not say when or how the smugglers entered Kuwait or when they were arrested.

The paper said the smugglers might have had accomplices inside Kuwait. It said Interior Minister Sheik Nawwaf Al Ahmed Al Sabah would hand over the smuggled weapons to an FBI agent at a news conference, but did not say when.

Government officials could not be immediately reached for comment.

Iraqi Interior Minister Nouri Al-Badran met on Tuesday with Sheik Nawwaf and discussed cooperation between the two countries in security matters. His visit is the first by an Iraqi interior minister to Kuwait since 1990.

PETULANT FRENZY. I was talking over the weekend to... well, let's say someone very near and dear to me. She went on at some length about her intense hatred of George W. Bush, going so far as to say that she was "embarrassed that he is our President" and that "if he gets reelected, I'm moving to Canada."

This is the kind of animus one often confronts when discussing current affairs with a Democrat or leftist. I have been trying hard to understand it, because I believe that herein lies one of the greatest threats to our democracy.

Viz: Think back to years gone by (just about any years will do, this isn't a generation-gap thing). Oh sure, the Republicans usually weren't too keen on Democratic presidents and vice-versa. Left-liberals had a major bug up their butts about Ronald Reagan, and Clinton (especially in his second term) drove some on the right nearly apoplectic. But this "moving to Canada" stuff is something new. So is the refusal to accept that Bush is our legally elected President, that the time to protest against the existence of the Electoral College was before--not after--the election, that the pumped-up "hanging chads" scandal was not the fault of George W. Bush and certainly not due to some heinous conspiracy orchestrated by his brother (the governor of Florida). And, when you get past his frat-boy braggadocio--which, I will concede, a certain type of person might find offensive (especially those persons who have had their heads sanded to a fine point by higher education)--what in reality has the man done that is really so awful ? This is not, of course, to say that there are not legitimate criticisms that can be leveled at our chief executive; he's no more perfect than any of our other Presidents. But GWB keeps his pants zipped and his nose to the grindstone, and has been astonishingly effective at dismantling the international terror apparatus that his predecessors chose to largely ignore. Charges that he is trying to "dismantle American democracy" are deluded at best and downright laughable at worst. The guy is a fairly standard-issue Republican who just happens to have an unerring instinct for knowing who the bad guys are. Again: what's so awful?

I've been turning this over and over and keep coming back to the same answer: it's the economy, stupid. What really softened uo America, in the end, was not sex or drugs or rock n' roll. It was the financial boom of the Clinton years--a boom for which Bill Clinton, by the way, bore no more responsibility than Bush did for 9/11. But to the Dems and the lefties, Clinton was their sugar daddy. On his watch, they saw their investments (and many of them were neophyte investors who merely jumped on the bandwagon) balloon into regular fortunes. For a lot of this crowd, being wealthy was a new experience, and Clinton was the guy (or so they thought) who had given them their piece of the pie. Then Bush was "elected" (their quotes, not mine), Islamist maniacs attacked us on 9/11, and suddenly we were at war. Never mind that the stock market started going south before Bush was in office; Clinton and the Dems had already been canonized by this spoiled, me-first crowd as the World's Biggest Teat. Along with this new lay-back-and-suck philosophy (which came especially naturally to lifelong believers in socialism and the redistribution of wealth) was the equally infantile notion that the world should just Leave Us Alone so we could Make More Money and Buy More Cool Stuff. Gone were the nostrums of the past about how we Americans were all in it together, about asking not what your country could do for you but what you could do for your country, about weathering the bad while you hoped for the good. The country now existed only as a kind of nursery that would protect one from all outside harm while the benefits of an out-of-control bull market continued to accrue.

Perhaps the most incriminatory hallmark of this worldview is the oft-voiced whine that, if we'd "just close our bases in Saudi Arabia" and "quit coddling the Israelis," the Islamofascists would lose interest in us and just go away (leaving us, of course, to rebuild the Great Bull Market and let the good times roll again). In otherwords, to kowtow to the stated demands of murderous maniacs--Chamberlain with a cynical twist. This suggests a new political theory: The acquisition of quick fortunes tends to rob people their historical hindsight, to turn them into the financial equivalent of crack addicts who will sell their very bodies for the next hit.

I loathed Bill Clinton, but he was my President and the leader of my nation. And I certainly would never have considered "moving to Canada" when Clinton was elected to his second term. As an American, my responsibility, then and now, was to engage in the constructive debate that is the right--no, the duty--of every citizen in a free society.

Sadly, all this talk about duty begins to get lost in the din when so many others are jangling their tip jars, willing to undo democratic process and their childrens' future just to get their stock winnings back...

MY TAKE ON ARNOLD. There’s more being said by Schwarzenegger’s near-landslide in California than just the electorate’s disgust with Gray Davis; this was also a referendum on public perception of Arnold as a human being, and the results showed the public’s resentment at having that perception toyed with. Yes, Arnie’s been around in the spotlight for a very long time, and Californians know him better than anyone. Since he’s never been shy about stepping up to the plate or expressing his opinions, most of us (even non-Californians) have, over the years, developed a certain view of the man who exists behind the Terminator’s stony superstar visage.

And that’s just it—either Schwarzenegger is a fundamentally decent human being, or he’s one of the best liars on earth. I still remember how he stopped at my son’s kindergarten in Madison, Wisconsin, many years ago—he was then chairing (I believe) the President’s Council on Physical Fitness. He gave his little speech in the gym, did some jumping jacks, and then spent a half hour in Mrs. Padley’s classroom with the kids, answering their questions and signing autographs. As he left, he turned and said, "Remember to do your homework—or I’ll be back! " Mrs. Padley later joked that she wasn’t sure that this was the best exit line; "Now they’ll never do their homework again!"

Arnold has always made himself available to the masses, and that is why so many people have met him. Few have been unimpressed, and not only by the former bodybuilder’s physique; it seems that everyone remembers the actor’s aw-shucks humility and self-deprecating wit.

So he groped some women; I’ve done some things I’m not exactly proud of either (which is why you won’t see me running for public office anytime soon). And it sure beats the hell out of pushing women or shaking them until their teeth rattle, which is what Gray Davis was fond of doing (although that didn't seem to bother the Dems at all). The salient facts here are 1) Arnold immediately owned up to it—what a concept!—and was willing to let the chips fall where they would; 2) He didn’t attempt to defend the behavior, not even to contextualize it (I’m an actor, you know, and sometimes we get wild n’ crazy on the set and horse around a bit ); 3) This happened a long time ago, and certainly not after he stepped into the Governor’s mansion. The man is a gubernatorial candidate, not the President of the United States. There’s a difference.

The Hitler thing was laughable from the get-go, and was quickly shown up for the Dem-orchestrated travesty that it was. As soon as the Dumbocrats put their foot in their mouths, the rabbi who runs the Simon Wiesenthal Center in Los Angeles felt compelled to point out that Schwarzenegger had, years ago, come to the Center on his own to document his father’s Nazi past. Arnold soon became a major contributor to the Center.

And, more recently:

Albert Kaufmann, a well known Austrian businessman and Jewish activist had a grandfather in Dachau concentration camp. He gets livid at the suggestion Arnold admired Hitler.

"This is extremely unfair. It is so unjust. He was pro-Jewish and supported me in my activities against Hitler ideology and neo-Nazism for years now," Kaufmann told CNN.

Does somebody smell a rat somewhere?

Well, I’m not the only one who did. It would seem that, in showing their overwhelming support for Arnold Schwarzenegger as Governor, the people of California have also soundly voted out the increasingly shrill and hysterical tenor of Dumbocrat character assassination.

10/22/03:

I'M TIRED... of the American newsmedia's attempts to manipulate me (and everyone else).

We live in different worlds, these media mavens and many of us who are exposed to their attempts to indoctrinate us. In the media world, we have a bumbling, ineffectual—or even evil—President who is bent on subverting American democracy while bleeding the treasury dry; we are tied up in a "quagmire" in Iraq, a country we were supposed to subdue, pacify, and completely reconstitute in a matter of weeks; we have "abandoned" Afghanistan; Howard Dean has already been anointed as the next U.S. President; and the greatest problem Americans now face is a weakened economy.

Say what ?!?

All of these popular nostrums are basically lies, and they continue to be foisted by our major media organs day after day after day, even if an even cursory reality check is sufficient to prove them wrong [case in point: The blogosphere is overflowing with e-mails from soldiers on active duty in Iraq, speaking with great pride about their accomplishments and the progress of Coalition forces and often citing the statements of Iraqis who are very glad that we are there and that Saddam is gone]. But our beloved media, having been enlisted early in the struggle by the playa-haters who loathe George Bush (mostly because, as the nation's Intellectual Elite, they have never been able to handle the notion that frat-boy Dubya is the world's number-one playa), are now in a spot where they can't easily jump ship. Having to report the news in such a way that tiresome union squabbles, the sexual peccadilloes of actresses and sports stars, and the ravings of the Democrat special-interest coalition are relegated to back pages is not what they want to do. They can't imagine a country that is truly on a wartime footing à la World War II, where the media needs to do its part as an American institution to help bring the country together (and not by getting up on a soapbox or propagandizing; merely by reporting the news accurately and with attention paid primarily to the WAR we are fighting). Instead they have been co-opted by a (mostly Democrat) special-interest coalition that seeks to remake America into a country that goes back to divvying up the goodies of the Clinton years while relying on the United Nations for our national security. Kofi Annan can sign our declarations of war (if any) and the French will send their brave soldiers (if any) into the front lines to defend us.

Thank God for the blogosphere. I have come to rely on my fellow bloggers more and more as a pipeline to news that is uncensored, unadorned, and available 24/7. Is it any wonder the mass media wants the blogosphere to go away? Unfortunately for them—and fortunately for us—it's not going to.

10/23/03:

THIS IS JUST TOO GOOD to miss... so I'm going to reproduce the whole thing right here. The writer is responding to a posting on the rather excellent blog of Daniel Drezner:

To respond adaquately will take a rather long post. Sorry. Let's begin. One of the ways to compare religions is by the norm and by the aberration. For example, Christ taught the following:

  1. Love God above everything else.
  2. God so loves you that he makes every attempt to create a personal, loving relationship with you
  3. Love everyone else more than you love yourself.
  4. Show mercy to each everyone.
  5. Turn the other cheek.
  6. Do unto others as you want them to do to you.
  7. Recognize that in God's eye's everyone is equally a sinner and equally deserving of God's mercy and love.
  8. Convert people to Christianity by loving them and convincing them that God loves them and forgives them.

Christ did the following:

Forgave an adulteress by telling her accusers, "Let the person without sin throw the first stone." And the men slowly left, first the older then the younger. Looking at the woman, Jesus asked, "Where are your accusers." She answered, "There are none." Then Jesus said, "Then I don't accuse you either, go and sin no more." [This is the amazing thing. Jesus did not deny that she had committed adultery. But while ordering her not to do that anymore, He also showered her with love and forgiveness.]

Christ's disciples did this:

Told newly converted pagans, "Keep yourself from sexual sin and take care of the widows and orphans." That was it, be faithful to your husbands and wives and take care of people who can't take care of themselves. That's it. No akillin' the infidel.

That's the norm. Here's the aberrations:

  1. Crusader Christians go to fight Muslims who are attacking them (Not supposed to engage in religious violence, you know, love and all)
  2. Spanish Inquisition
  3. Religious-based conquest by the Iberians (Portuguese and Spanish)including both the New World and the Indian sub-continent.
  4. Post reformation Protestant / Catholic warfare

Here's the norm for Islam:

Mohammed taught:

  1. Live in submission and obedience to an impersonal god.
  2. To be eligible for heaven, you must do the five pillars of Islam.
  3. To be guaranteed to get to heaven, die while killing a non-Muslim.
  4. Kill or subjugate every non-Muslim.

Mohammed did this:

Lied, broke treaties, had sex with 9 year old, and lead armies to kill and subjugate non-Muslims.

Mohammed's disciples did this:

  1. Assassinated (word comes from Islamic sect) several of Mohammed's successors during power struggles after his death
  2. Split the faith after the murder of Ali, one of Mohammed's successors. Ali's followers are known as Ali's Partisans or Shi'Ali, or Shia. They fight the rest of Islam, called the Sunnis for the next 1300 years.
  3. Spread their faith by military conquest

What's the aberration?

  1. Tolerance of other religions
  2. Peace with non-Muslims
  3. Mercy toward non-Muslims

Food for thought - Muslims conquered the Iberian Peninsula in the mid-700s. The Spanish completed the recon quest in 1492. Might the Iberians have picked up a flavor of Islam during all those centuries of living under their Islamic rulers? Could there be a link between the rather cruel Spanish and Portuguese form of Christianity and their experiences with Islam?

Finally, I have no hope for an Islamic Reformation. The Roman Catholics had gone so far from the roots of the Christian faith that the Reformation sought to return the Church to those roots. Do we really want Islam to return to its roots? Just a thought.

SHUT UP! SHUT UP! SHUT UP ALREADY! It seems that these days, roughly half the population of the US is gabbing on a cell phone at any given moment. You can't even take a whizz in a public restroom without having to listen to some boring-ass salesman yukking it up on his phone. You're at Target or Wal-Mart and every single mom and teenaged girl in the store is going on, and on, and on--and, incidentally, a good many of the men too. Last month, at Tulane University, I heard a coed breezily chatting up a friend, comparing their boyfriends' penis sizes while floucing down a busy campus street, Nokia (not penis) in hand. And don't even get me started on the murderous lunkheads piloting around six-ton SUVs while they gab ecstatically away.

How the hell are we supposed to navigate the dangerous waters of the War On Terror if we can't even shut the fuck up and put our cell phones away? Who taught this nation that it has to be on the phone all the time?!?!

"WASHINGTON — Retiring Democratic Sen. Zell Miller has backed his horse in the 2004 presidential election — President Bush.

"The way I see it is, that these next five years are going to be crucial in determining what kind of world my grandchildren and great grandchildren live in, and I don't want to entrust that to any of these folks that are running out there on the Democratic side. I'm going to vote for George Bush," Miller said in a taped interview for Fox News.

Miller, the one-term senator from Georgia who has supported Bush on issues from Iraq to judicial nominees to tax cuts, said he doesn't plan to become a Republican, but he will back one against any of the nine Democrats seeking to unseat Bush.

"I think that George Bush is the right man in the right place in the right time," the former governor said. "I think he's got some [Winston] Churchill in him. He understands the history of freedom. He knows where it came from, and he's not afraid to take sides. I loved him whenever he looked at the American people on Tuesday and said, 'We're not leaving [Iraq].'"

When Miller announced his retirement in January, he said that he was going to stay out of political campaigns. But Wednesday's endorsement demonstrated that he has changed his mind.

Miller said he would help Bush any way he can because "that's the kind of man I want in there as commander-in-chief."

"'Citizenship' means only an opportunity to make money, take advantage, and murder others (if you're a Muslim terrorist). American citizenship is virtually meaningless anymore. There is no relationship to the country required whatsoever.

"These third word countries, so terribly overpopulated, feel that America is theirs, by rights. American idealists have been so short-sighted, so politically motivated, so generally stupid and uniformed as to think that America is an unlimited thing, and that there's plenty for everyone.

"America has become a buffet of international cultures. All are here for their own benefit, as if America is just one huge world bazaare. There is no concept of a country. It is all merely a business opportunity, and it is owed to the world. The world owns America. It is the world's place to come and be, to come and take advantage.

"Anyone who has any problem with this trend is racist, sexist, bigoted, prejudiced, biased, closed minded, dangerous, retarded, and uninformed..."

IT'S FRIDAY, IT'S HALLOWEEN, AND I NEED FRANK:

HILLARY: If I can get my health care plan passed, it will destroy our hospitals and millions will die. Muh ha ha ha!

BILL: It's too bad those do-gooder Republicans are trying to stop us and protect the interests of America.

HILLARY: No one can stop us! Now go have fun with your interns while I work on my lesbian conspiracies...

AND BELATED CONGRATULATIONS TO... my young dog, the hyperactive GSD/Malinois Katalina vom Romanoff, HIC (Callee)--who is now officially a bitin' dawg. Tested the irrepressible CalGalPal in Schutzhund bitework last week (figuring what the hell, she really went for those sheep...). They tell you that you can forget about ever doing Schutzhund with a pound puppy or a rescue dog like Cal, because dogs possessing the requisite sound temperament AND bombproof nerves never wind up in rescue.

I always knew that Cal was an extraordinary dog-which is why I adopted her to begin with. She sure did me proud last Sunday, really mixing it up with the helper dude and then galloping off the field proudly, the sleeve buried in her clenched jaws. You would have thought she'd been doing it for years. You go, girl!

sorry
