MY TAKE ON ARNOLD. There’s more being said by Schwarzenegger’s near-landslide
in California than just the electorate’s disgust with Gray Davis; this was also
a referendum on public perception of Arnold as a human being, and the results
showed the public’s resentment at having that perception toyed with. Yes,
Arnie’s been around in the spotlight for a very long time, and Californians know
him better than anyone. Since he’s never been shy about stepping up to the plate
or expressing his opinions, most of us (even non-Californians) have, over the
years, developed a certain view of the man who exists behind the Terminator’s
stony superstar visage. And that’s just it—either Schwarzenegger is a fundamentally decent human
being, or he’s one of the best liars on earth. I still remember how he stopped
at my son’s kindergarten in Madison, Wisconsin, many years ago—he was then
chairing (I believe) the President’s Council on Physical Fitness. He gave his
little speech in the gym, did some jumping jacks, and then spent a half hour in
Mrs. Padley’s classroom with the kids, answering their questions and signing
autographs. As he left, he turned and said, "Remember to do your homework—or
I’ll be back! " Mrs. Padley later joked that she wasn’t sure that this
was the best exit line; "Now they’ll never do their homework again!" Arnold has always made himself available to the masses, and that is why so
many people have met him. Few have been unimpressed, and not only by the former
bodybuilder’s physique; it seems that everyone remembers the actor’s aw-shucks
humility and self-deprecating wit. So he groped some women; I’ve done some things I’m not exactly proud of
either (which is why you won’t see me running for public office anytime
soon). And it sure beats the hell out of pushing women or shaking them until
their teeth rattle, which is what Gray Davis was fond of doing (although
that didn't seem to bother the Dems at all). The salient facts here are
1) Arnold immediately owned up to it—what a concept!—and was willing to
let the chips fall where they would; 2) He didn’t attempt to defend the
behavior, not even to contextualize it (I’m an actor, you know, and sometimes
we get wild n’ crazy on the set and horse around a bit ); 3) This happened a
long time ago, and certainly not after he stepped into the Governor’s
mansion. The man is a gubernatorial candidate, not the President of the United
States. There’s a difference. The Hitler thing was laughable from the get-go, and was quickly shown up for
the Dem-orchestrated travesty that it was. As soon as the Dumbocrats put their
foot in their mouths, the rabbi who runs the Simon Wiesenthal Center in Los
Angeles felt compelled to point out that Schwarzenegger had, years ago, come
to the Center on his own to document his father’s Nazi past. Arnold soon
became a major contributor to the Center. And, more recently: "This is extremely unfair. It is so unjust. He was pro-Jewish and supported
me in my activities against Hitler ideology and neo-Nazism for years now,"
Kaufmann told CNN. Does somebody smell a rat somewhere? Well, I’m not the only one who did. It would seem that, in showing their
overwhelming support for Arnold Schwarzenegger as Governor, the people of
California have also soundly voted out the increasingly shrill and hysterical
tenor of Dumbocrat character assassination.

10/23/03: To respond adaquately will take a rather long post. Sorry. Let's begin. One
of the ways to compare religions is by the norm and by the aberration. For
example, Christ taught the following: Christ did the following: Forgave an adulteress by telling her accusers, "Let the person without sin
throw the first stone." And the men slowly left, first the older then the
younger. Looking at the woman, Jesus asked, "Where are your accusers." She
answered, "There are none." Then Jesus said, "Then I don't accuse you either,
go and sin no more." [This is the amazing thing. Jesus did not deny that she
had committed adultery. But while ordering her not to do that anymore, He also
showered her with love and forgiveness.] Christ's disciples did this: Told newly converted pagans, "Keep yourself from sexual sin and take care
of the widows and orphans." That was it, be faithful to your husbands and
wives and take care of people who can't take care of themselves. That's it. No
akillin' the infidel. That's the norm. Here's the aberrations: Here's the norm for Islam: Mohammed taught: Mohammed did this: Lied, broke treaties, had sex with 9 year old, and lead armies to kill and
subjugate non-Muslims. Mohammed's disciples did this: What's the aberration? Food for thought - Muslims conquered the Iberian Peninsula in the mid-700s.
The Spanish completed the recon quest in 1492. Might the Iberians have picked
up a flavor of Islam during all those centuries of living under their Islamic
rulers? Could there be a link between the rather cruel Spanish and Portuguese
form of Christianity and their experiences with Islam? Finally, I have no hope for an Islamic Reformation. The Roman Catholics had
gone so far from the roots of the Christian faith that the Reformation sought
to return the Church to those roots. Do we really want Islam to return to its
roots? Just a thought.

Kuwait foils smuggling of chemicals, bio warheads from Iraq
Associated Press, Kuwait City, October 2
Kuwaiti security authorities have foiled an attempt to smuggle $60
million worth of chemical weapons and biological warheads from Iraq to an
unnamed European country, a Kuwaiti newspaper said on Wednesday.
The pro-Government Al-Siyassah, quoting an unnamed security source,
said the suspects had been watched by security since they arrived in Kuwait
and were arrested "in due time." It did not say when or how the smugglers
entered Kuwait or when they were arrested.
The paper said the smugglers might have had accomplices inside Kuwait.
It said Interior Minister Sheik Nawwaf Al Ahmed Al Sabah would hand over the
smuggled weapons to an FBI agent at a news conference, but did not say when.
Government officials could not be immediately reached for comment.
Iraqi Interior Minister Nouri Al-Badran met on Tuesday with Sheik
Nawwaf and discussed cooperation between the two countries in security
matters. His visit is the first by an Iraqi interior minister to Kuwait since
1990.

Note: I personally think that another factor that may help to
rehabilitate the northern Plains is a modest, but steady, influx of people like
myself who want to live a libertarian lifestyle, unencumbered by bureaucracies
gone mad, unreasonable gun and pet laws, anti-smoking ordinances, and
restrictions on free speech. I have planned to retire in South Dakota for nearly
as long as I can remember. What a beautiful part of the world. The emptiness,
and the returning wildlife, only make it more so.

"WASHINGTON — Retiring
Democratic Sen. Zell Miller has backed his horse in the 2004 presidential
election — President Bush.
"The way I see it is, that these next five years are going to be crucial
in determining what kind of world my grandchildren and great grandchildren live
in, and I don't want to entrust that to any of these folks that are running out
there on the Democratic side. I'm going to vote for George Bush," Miller said in
a taped interview for Fox News.
Miller, the one-term senator from Georgia who has supported Bush on
issues from Iraq to judicial nominees to tax cuts, said he doesn't plan to
become a Republican, but he will back one against any of the nine Democrats
seeking to unseat Bush.
"I think that George Bush is the right man in the right place in the
right time," the former governor said. "I think he's got some [Winston]
Churchill in him. He understands the history of freedom. He knows where it came
from, and he's not afraid to take sides. I loved him whenever he looked at the
American people on Tuesday and said, 'We're not leaving [Iraq].'"
When Miller announced his retirement in January, he said that he was
going to stay out of political campaigns. But Wednesday's endorsement
demonstrated that he has changed his mind.
Miller said he would help Bush any way he can because "that's the kind of
man I want in there as commander-in-chief."

AND BELATED
CONGRATULATIONS TO... my young dog, the hyperactive GSD/Malinois Katalina vom
Romanoff, HIC (Callee)--who is now officially a bitin' dawg. Tested the
irrepressible CalGalPal in Schutzhund bitework last week (figuring what the
hell, she really went for those sheep...). They tell you that you can forget
about ever doing Schutzhund with a pound puppy or a rescue dog like Cal, because
dogs possessing the requisite sound temperament AND bombproof nerves never wind
up in rescue.
I always knew that Cal was an extraordinary dog-which is why I adopted
her to begin with. She sure did me proud last Sunday, really mixing it up with
the helper dude and then galloping off the field proudly, the sleeve buried in
her clenched jaws. You would have thought she'd been doing it for years. You go,
girl!
